Abstract

This article explores the key role of the English language in critical

thinking in legal practice, particularly in common law jurisdictions where English

serves as a medium of communication and a source of legal argument. By way of

qualitative and conceptual analysis, it shows how linguistic proficiency is better able

to enable the lawyer to interpret legal texts, build an argument, and analyze evidence.

Utilizing legal education frameworks and theory of cognition and language, the

article illustrates that English is not just a means of communication in law, but a

system that enables critical examination, accuracy, and persuasive writing. The

findings argue in favor of more structured integration of English language

development and legal reasoning instruction, especially for non-native entrants into

English-speaking legal orders.
