Abstract

This thesis explores the critical role of language in shaping the practices,

policies, and outcomes of hydro melioration, the process of improving water

management systems for agricultural and environmental benefits. By examining the

interplay between technical terminology, cultural narratives, and stakeholder

communication, the study highlights how language influences project design,

community engagement, and policy implementation. Drawing on case studies and

sociotechnical frameworks, the thesis argues that effective linguistic strategies can

enhance collaboration and sustainability in hydro melioration initiatives. The research

is intended for academics, policymakers, and practitioners in environmental

engineering and water management. The science and practice of improving water

management systems such as irrigation, drainage, and flood control. It examines how

precise terminology, multilingual communication, and culturally sensitive language

facilitate effective collaboration, policy implementation, and technological

advancement in hydromelioration projects. The study highlights the challenges of

linguistic barriers in international and interdisciplinary contexts and proposes

strategies to enhance communication for sustainable water management. By

analyzing case studies and linguistic frameworks, the thesis underscores the necessity

of standardized and inclusive language to address global water challenges. The

intended audience includes environmental scientists, policymakers, and linguists

interested in interdisciplinary approaches to water resource management
