TEACHING HOW TO ACTIVATE PASSIVE VOCABULARY

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is an important part of learning a language, but many learners find it difficult to use their passive vocabulary — the words they understand and know how to spell but do not use in conversation and written communication. This study examines how effective pedagogical strategies enable passive vocabulary to be integrated into active use. By exploring communicative language teaching (CLT), translanguaging, corrective feedback and motivation-based approaches, this study informs best practices for activating linguistics. This suggests that interactive, contextualized learning environments lead to better retrieval and use of vocabulary. This study also emphasizes the cognitive load theory and scaffolding, which has shown to improve lexical retrieval. These findings are relevant to the use of multimodal learning tools in vocabulary education.
