Abstract

This article examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the professional development

of foreign language teachers, analyzing both opportunities and challenges from an academic

perspective. After outlining limitations of traditional in-service training, the paper reviews innovative

AI applications—adaptive learning platforms, automated assessment, speech recognition, and AI-

assisted translation tools—and their potential to personalize instruction, reduce teacher workload, and

support resource creation. It also addresses ethical and practical concerns such as plagiarism, data

privacy, algorithmic bias, technological adaptation barriers, and fears about teacher displacement. The

conclusion emphasizes that AI should be viewed as a tool that enriches and augments teachers’

professional practice rather than replaces them, recommending increased digital literacy training for

teachers, clear ethical guidelines, and policies that balance human and technological factors.
